11/8/2010

We had a long flight over, but having exit row seats from Singapore to London was great. Our first night was in Munich, near the airport. The hotel/room was very nice and very cheap. AUD$83 for bed, breakfast and shuttle back to the airport to pick up the hire car. We had no dramas picking up the car and finding our way out of the airport and into Austria.

We are staying at a small town called Forstau, about 70km from Salzburg. In the winter it is a small ski area with a ski lift about 100m from the apartment where we are staying. I can see the ski lift from where I am sitting now. The apartment is beautiful. We have the top floor attic apartment in a house that has 3 apartments with the owner and her family living on the ground floor. Anabell is about 30 and has a husband, Nicholas and 2 young boys and another baby due in November. We are the only ones staying in the apartments at the moment. I think they do most of their business in the ski season. We have a balcony and the view is quite spectacular. Mountains surround us and everywhere is so green.

We arrived at Forstau on Monday, and on Tuesday got right into the hiking. We drove to a small place in the mountains called Gosau, in the middle of an area called the Salzkammergut, east of Salzburg. The hike started at a large lake called Vorderer Gosausee that had the huge Dachstein Mountain Range mirrored in the water and the view was quite spectacular.

The hike was 15km (round trip) up to the end of the valley below the ice packed Dachstein that can be seen in the middle of the picture above, past another lake and this mountain hut residing by the third lake, the Hinterer Gosausee. The view from here was spectacular as well, as we had walked 7.5km closer and 220m higher.

After we finished the hike, we took a ride on a mountain lift that went up another side of the Dachsteins that gave us a view of where we had hiked. What a fabulous view!! And a feeling of achievement too.

We had a beautiful day and thoroughly enjoyed the hike. But I am a bit worried that the other hikes I have in mind might be a bit much for us oldies. 220m height gain today is nothing compared to some of the hikes that I have chosen. Some over 1000m. But it is early days yet so we will have to wait and see how we go.
