12 August 2010

Well didn't we come a cropper today. We were going to have a lazy day but thought at the last minute that we would go to visit a local waterfall with the possibility of a small hike. Riesachfalle. Our host had recommended the waterfall so off we went. There were about 5 ways to get to the top of the falls and because we couldn't understand the language, we just picked one and off we went. What a slog!! 1.3km and about 1 hour of up, up and up even further. On steel steps bolted into the side of the cliff, pathways with steel ropes the only thing keeping you from plunging into the 35m ravine below, across several small narrow bridges and one metal suspension bridge that hung above the waterfall. And I don't like heights!! All to the enormous roar of the fast flowing falls pounding over the rocky mountain. Very scary but exhilarating. And a sense of accomplishment when you get to the top. Well , not as exhilarating when you realise that the person in front of you as you reach the top is about 10 years older than you and has hardly raised a sweat!! Not too many photos today as I was too busy clutching anything that was going to stop me heading over the side.

When we got to the top, we decided to go for a bit of a hike further up the valley. And it was beautiful. Up a small valley with a wall of mountains blocking the way further. Most of the hikes have what they call alms along the way. They are meadows with a hut that sell food and drink to the hikers. It is so amazing to be in the middle of nowhere and to all of a sudden come across a hut. Each alm has it's own name. The one at the top is called Gfolleralm and the building that you can see in the photo is called Wieseralm.

The photo below is of a side valley that is a hike for another day.
