12th September 2010

Today is a 'get to know the area' day. There are so many valleys all with outstanding views and hikes, it is hard to know where to start. So we headed to Lauterbrunnen and did a 14km return hike up the valley to Stechelberg. It is a beautiful narrow valley with soaring cliffs on both sides and waterfalls flowing down these cliffs the whole length of the valley. There are several lifts that take you up to the top of the cliffs and snow-capped peaks await you on arrival.

On the hike we visited the Trummelbach Falls. These falls are amazing. From the outside you would not even know that they are there. You can only hear them. The falls are entirely inside the mountain. So that visitors may see the falls from top to bottom, they have drilled a tunnel from the bottom to half way up and installed a lift. Or you can walk all the way up. Having a lazy day so we took the lift. The force of the water has eroded a canyon inside the mountain and the water from the falls, swirl and tumble from one level to the next. The sound of the crashing water inside the cavern is almost deafening. Quite a spectacle.
